As my wife’s birthday neared, I have thought of the perfect plan to surprise her. Since we both had to go to work on the day of her birthday, I sent her sunflowers at her workplace with bits of eucalyptus in there. She always liked those long-stemmed flowers. It made her smile so much that I would exchange anything for that smile not to go away. After that, I wrote a series of letters for her to read. One letter was to be opened when she woke up right beside me on our bed. The second letter would be opened after dinner. The third letter was to be opened after I have made her feel like the best woman in the world because she is and she deserves the best. A lot of people would say that this might be too simple or this is such a mainstream move, but my wife is simple and I love her for that.
Now, let me tell you how I got into the preparation of my wife’s simple, sweet birthday celebration. I had to research where to buy flowers in Manila. I was not sure if people still liked flowers or they were too hyped in transitioning in to the cyber world. Thank God, I found a store that does flower delivery in Makati. The shop I found were very polite in accommodating my wants and demands in regards with the flower arrangement I asked. The flowers were also delivered on time. In short, they were very professional and very easy to talk to. Working in the metropolis, I was really relieved to have discovered a flower shop that also caters delivery in Makati and other nearby areas as one of their services. If not for them, my wife would not have given me the sweet smile I always yearned. Next, as for the restaurant, it did not really give me a hard time picking which one to make a reservation to. My wife loves trying new restaurants and different types of cuisine. So, I booked the new restaurant near our home. Actually, she has been bugging me to eat there for weeks now. A quick preview of my wife’s cooking – she is adventurous in food and has a good judgement in regards with food. She looks at how the dishes are made and then she tries to replicate them at home. Let me tell you, it may not be perfectly replicated, but it still tastes so good. She recreates them and puts a little bit of her touch that makes it taste so much better. Even though you might say I am biased since I am her husband, a lot of people would agree with me and vouch my claims regarding her cooking. Lastly, as we got home laughing with her pretty brown dress that perfectly hugs the curves of her body, I saw a happy, fulfilled woman. To be honest, I could not ask for anything more. I am really grateful for the flowery shop which went through greatly with the delivery and the surprise restaurant I brought her to that served really great food which gave my wife new ideas for her next experimental dishes. I cannot wait to try out her next cuisine. But overall, I am just glad that I saw my woman happy.

Flowers are the universal gift. Regardless of occasion or purpose, flowers seem to convey the most basic yet most meaningful gesture of goodwill. Of course, popular culture across history has always emphasized the romantic notion of giving flowers which hare often portrayed through the giving of flowers during stages of courtship or as everyday expression of love between lovers and family members.
And there are also the popular practices of flowers being given during special instances such as when a person is sick or when a person visits a home, it is almost customary to bring flowers. It is also a symbol of welcome such as when a newcomer in the neighbour is welcomed by baskets of wine with flowers or when a new boss arrives in an office and is greeted by a bouquet of flowers. In that sense, whether by itself or as an accompanying component of a gift, flowers simply provides an additional meaning to any gesture especially when the expression is directed at a woman or girl. Flowers as Symbols The most common flower used as gift is a rose. Since before 17th century, the rose has been universally used as a symbol of love in the same way that red is an enduring symbol of affection. In timeless classics in literature, the rose has been used as a symbol of deep emotions and stories of passion, intense attraction, deep infatuations have always one way or the other involved the use of the red rose as a symbol. From Shakespeare to Eco, the red rose has played a powerful image of love regardless of whether the story is comedy or tragedy. In folklore and myth however, the white tulip has also become a common fixture. As it is with the red rose, the color of the tulip has much to do with its symbolic use. Understandably so, the tulip alternately represents unity and expression of general goodwill rather than romantic affections. In some stories, the white tulip is used in religious rituals and practices often as way of expressing innocence and purity. In Europe, the white tulip is considered a symbol of order and serenity and may be found in the remote country side of the continent where indeed life is simple and serene. Flowers and the Modern Industry Due to the universal and multi-faceted appeal of the flower, it is hardly a wonder why the flower industry has persisted and has in fact survived as a billion dollar industry across the ages and despite the emergence of newer forms of practical and creative gift items. Even is such a small country such as the Philippines, there are more than a thousand flower shops in the main island of Luzon alone. This is even more interesting since as a tropical country where majority of lands are devoted to either residential, agricultural or industrial purposes, the flower industry has remained vibrant across the country’s colonial history. In the country today, even local markets and other vendors sell flowers especially during special occasions like valentines. Meanwhile, flower shops have also evolved into more comprehensive gift-giving service providers and not just the average traditional flower stalls. In the metro, these shops provide custom arrangements complete with customized card designs and special combination packages. In busy centers like Quezon City and Makati area, affordable flower shops abound. These flower shops are customer preferred friendly shops that provide flower delivery in nearby areas including deliver of flower wreaths. These shops have become customer favorites due also to their on-line presence and are likely to show up on searches on where to buy flowers in Manila. |
